Abbott Ph. D. ~ ACSM Health and Wellness Coach
If
the horse won't go, ride upon the wings of change.
As a wellness
coach, college professor, and health educator I try to live
my life by this motto. If some area of my life isn't working,
if I'm not enjoying what I'm doing, and if the people I've
surrounded myself with aren't adding energy to my life, then
it's time to get off that horse and make a change.
Change! What a scary, risky, unsettling thing to do. However,
without change, we may never know what lies ahead. Having
spent over 30 years as a teacher and curriculum developer
in family life education and health, I am currently the owner
of the Institute For Change, a business dedicated to supporting
individuals as each discovers the process of positive self
change. I am a Health and Wellness Coach, certified by Wellcoaches®
and the American College of Sports Medicine and teach various
courses in the Social Science department at two local community
colleges. I am a certified fitness instructor and teach Zumba
(Latin infused aerobic dance) within the local community.
I received my BS in secondary physical education/health and
have a minor in Dance Education from the University of Northern
Colorado, Greeley. After coaching gymnastics and teaching
for a private school in Colorado, I earned a Masters and Ph.D.
in Family Life Education and Consultation, from Kansas State
University, Manhattan, Kansas. My emphasis of study was in
lifespan health education.
In 1999 I opened a business, LifeCentrics, through which prevention
health education programs were designed for and presented
to businesses and small groups. A branch of the business focused
on life coaching, assisting individuals who desired to make
changes in their lives. Before moving to Kansas City in 2004,
I sold my stock in LifeCentrics and began working with the
United States Army at Fort Riley, Kansas, as a curriculum
and course of study consultant for their college education
program. While at Fort Riley, I worked with Barton County
College's online degree program as a curriculum development
specialist. Through my wellness coaching, mentoring, and through
my teaching I now have an opportunity to share my expertise
and passion with those who desire to make lasting lifelong
health and wellness changes in their lives.
